People living in North London who have concerns or questions about dementia are invited to drop by the O2 Centre for some free expert advice.
Dementia specialists, including an Admiral Nurse, will be manning an advice stand next to the entrance to Sainsbury’s, on Friday 9 September, between 10am – 5pm.
In honour of National Dementia Carers’ Day 2016, the team will be offering advice and guidance to anyone who is concerned about any aspect of dementia, whether for themselves or if they are worried about a friend or relative. They will be able to offer reassurance and guidance, and to point people in the direction of local support services and further information.
Admiral Nurse Rikki Lorenti, who will be attending on the day, commented: “We would welcome anyone who is worried about memory problems, a diagnosis of dementia, or who is caring for someone with dementia, to pop along and see us.”
He continued: “There are many challenges that can arise along the dementia journey, including diagnosis, decisions over support and care provision and feelings of loss and bereavement as the condition progresses. One of the most important things that families can do is to keep talking. Make sure you have a support network in place and plan ahead, as it can really help. Remember you are not alone, there are organisations out there that understand and can help and support you.”
There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, two thirds of which are living and being supported within the community. Now in its third year, National Dementia Carers’ Day (NDCD) was introduced to recognise the efforts of the thousands of people across the UK who are caring for someone close to them who has dementia.
Taking place on Sunday 11 September 2016, this year’s campaign is encouraging members of the public to show their support for a dementia carer they know. This may be by sending them a card, buying them flowers, cooking them lunch or generally doing something to ‘show a carer you care’.
Community groups, charities and support groups are invited to share details of any local events they are holding to mark the national day, using #NDCD2016. Informal carers can also share their experiences and any advice they have for other carers, through the website.
