The ‘Silent Army’: Dementia Carers
With around 1 million people living with dementia in the UK, it is no surprise that this condition has a major impact on our society. It is estimated that 700,000 people in the country are caring for someone living with dementia, with the majority being unpaid. This, along with the isolation that caregivers face (with 1 in 2 claiming they have no one else available to care), has prompted some to denominate them ‘the silent army’.
Understanding Dementia
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of conditions that affect how the brain works. Some of the most common forms of dementia are frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Lewy body dementia. All forms of dementia involve physical changes to the brain, but symptoms vary.
